About Professional Science Masters

A Professional Science Master's (PSM) is a graduate degree that combines advanced scientific training with professional skills and business knowledge, preparing students for leadership roles outside academia. It differs from traditional Master's degrees by focusing on interdisciplinary studies, workplace readiness, and industry partnerships. In lieu of a research-driven thesis, students complete a capstone project with an outside non-academic sponsor. Visit professionalsciencemasters.org to learn more.

Getting In

Students with a strong background in STEM and a minimum 3.0 undergraduate GPA are encouraged to apply. Each degree has its own prerequisites.

Biotechnology: an undergraduate degree in a biological science, chemistry, or biotechnology is ideal.

Computational & Data Science: designed for students with a computer science or math degree. The minimum math required is Calculus 1-3 and linear algebra. Students should be proficient in multiple programming languages; recommended computer science prerequisites include Object-Oriented Programming, Algorithms and Data Structures, Data Analysis, and Software Practice.

Environmental Science: applicants should have taken calculus, chemistry, and science classes in other disciplines which may include biology, physics, geology, atmospheric sciences, and GIS.

February 1st (Priority deadline)

April 1st (Regular deadline)

Late applications maybe considered on a rolling basis until all program seats are full or until June 30.

The GRE is not required and students who do not submit their GRE score will not be disadvantaged.

If you feel that your GRE scores will strengthen your application you can submit them.

  • A BS in a related STEM field, with the necessary prerequisites
  • A minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Professional work experience preferred
  • Defined professional goals
  • Understanding why this program is a good fit for you
  • Three letters of recommendation
    • Can be a mix of academic and professional sources

We have had students with non-STEM undergraduate degrees succeed in the program, but only if they have adequate prerequisites for the graduate-level STEM classes they will be required to take as part of the program. Many of these students reached out over a year before applying to the program for advice as they assessed their readiness and took prerequisites. If you fall into this category, please reach out for information specific to your circumstance.

It is common for students to look into transitioning into a different STEM field. For example, change from biotechnology to data science. While this is possible, it requires several prerequisites to enter this PSM program. We are happy to discuss your specific goals and how you can make that transition.

Program

Full-time students can complete the program in 4 semesters (2 years). Part-time students usually complete the program in 6 semesters (3 years). Students must complete the program within 4 years.

Students may change their course load to fit their needs. The PSM program recommends taking no more than 9-11 credit hours during one semester.

Courses

The MST courses offered by our program, which make up 9-15 credits of a 36- credit PSM degree, are offered in the evening. However, most of a PSM student's coursework will be taken from other departments, such as Computer Science or Biology, and those courses are generally offered in-person and during the day. Few graduate-level STEM courses are currently offered online at the University of Utah.

Yes. Any student can benefit from these classes and they are designed and taught in a way that can be useful for experienced professionals or recent graduates. For student reactions to our Professional Development class, scroll to "What students have to say about MST 6200.

International Students

The PSM program puts a high value on communication skills. While the PSM administration supports all our students to the best of our abilities, we have found that students who only narrowly meet the language requirements set by the university frequently struggle in coursework and in navigating graduate school generally. As part of our commitment to ensuring we set up our students for success, the PSM program reserves the right to hold our applicants to a higher standard of English proficiency than the University of Utah generally does. Visit U of U Admissions to learn more about the English proficiency requirements.
